Many people have the view that innovation has to be big, disruptive and breakthrough.
Think of the impact of the ipad or itunes or Facebook or Twitter for example.
These types of innovation are memorable and can have a major impact on any organisation.
They can create or shatter industries.
But.
It is not the only type of innovation.
There is another kind which I will call — everyday innovation.
I believe there are many benefits of this type of innovation:
– It can engage more people
– Innovation can be applied to everyday problems or challenges. This means the impact of thinking differently can be felt across the business not just in the new product area for example.
– Everyday can have a major, cumulative impact on an organisations culture
– Big, new ideas often emerge from a thousand smaller ones.
– Breakthrough innovation often is only visible in retrospect.
– Large change often has to start small. The civil rights movement in the US for example, started with one person not giving up her seat on a bus.
– Sometimes the best ideas come from the most unexpected of places and people.
I am not arguing that big innovation is not necessary.
Quite the opposite.
But everyday innovation also has it place.
Innovation is like a muscle and the more it is practiced the bigger it becomes.
Everyday innovation creates a new language and i have found creates a more open and responsive culture because everyone can play.
It also means that for everyday innovation to take off we need to develop a new innovative tool we can use everyday.
We believe we have found it.
It’s called Ideas Blitz.
